Six kids and six goals – all six had their own way of working. They choose what they wanted to do, how they wanted to do, all in one session. We had one weekly objective and this week it was “visual observation”.
I played the role to bring rich resources, make environment challenging, understand their needs and listen to their minds. In the process I too learnt to look at various topics in different ways.
We began with reading about “what is Visual observation”. While we were reading, we also did some activities to observe in detail (lines, shapes, size, colour and so on), observe from different perspective and observe to learn (words, concept etc.).
One child explored fashion designing
- Observe various sizes of clothes and measure the dimensions and make a comparative chart.
- Observe various types of clothing (state, countries) and share what is your belief when you see that costume.
- Play instruments and observe the curves of the instruments to make a bag.
- Read books on fashion
- Video/ Books/ Pictures of the process of making a cloth and process of stitching of clothes.
- How to measure the sizes of the clothes.
One child wanted to understand Jewellery
- Measure dimensions of various jewellery. Observe different sizes.
- Observe people’s jewellery and guess what is their favourite jewellery, how much they wear.
- Observe different kinds of jewellery and instead of asking I want to know what my belief about that jewellery are (I cannot wear, not fit me etc).
- When I put a bead what kind of sound comes? I will observe which bead makes what sound, observe different material.
- Observe the jewellery and write about it. Read about the jewellery and observe what kinds of words they use.
- Observe all beads and jewellery – shape, size, lines, colures, material, holes, designs, and patterns.
- Observe someone making jewellery. Feel, touch the material and guess what material it is made.
- Observe different sticks, leaves, stones, seeds, fruits. And make jewellery with that.
One child wanted to understand Portrait
- Observe and reproduce the existing portrait 10 times more. Make mathematical equations with body proportions.
- Read about three personalities about whom I do not know and draw the portrait of the person by observing words. Observe the real portrait and compare writing, picture and portrait.
- Observe a portrait of a person playing a musical instrument. Observe how the person is paying the instrument – observe lines, curves etc.
- Observe a picture of a person and observe – shade, light, lines. And then draw the portrait.
- Observe the facial expression – observe how facial expression change the lines and lights of the portrait.
- Observe anatomy of the body – use Mechanic set to explore different joints and then observe in a portrait. Also read how Leonardo Da Vinci worked on making portrait.
One child wanted to know about Mural
- Observe and estimate how much of material is used in the mural.
- Read about what is Mural? Read how different people make Mural.
- Observe the musical instrument and use in the Mural – observe curves, size, depth, material, structure.
- Draw the Mural and label the Mural.
- Divide the Mural in four parts and observe what is in all different parts. -Observe the Mural with eyes – Lines, shapes, sizes, material.Observe with hands – Texture, temperature,
One child wanted to work on Madhubani Painitings
- Take any element of the Madhubani painting like Tree and now compare with real tree, tree in different styles of painting like Warli and miniature.
- Read about culture of the area (Maithili) and observe how it has evolved. Observe different pictures of Madhubani pictures then and now.
- When I am working on it, I will see how much I know about my feelings – I will be observe and draw.
- Listen to Music o Maithili and listen to any other song – observe the changes and differences.
- Read a paragraph about Madhubani and about Waril, about two three paintings and observe the different words used.
- Observing lines and curves in the Madhubani paintings.
- Will try different mediums like paint, pencils and crayons and observe the strokes – thickness, thinness, usability etc.
- Observe different properties of the paints. How do they behave in different mediums?
One child wanted to work on shapes
- Go around and touch the shapes in environment
- Cut the shapes and collect for mummy.
- Read books and look for shapes.
- Look for shapes in dresses.
- Collect and sort them in shapes.
So much to learn ……………………my education is yet not completed – I am learning everyday.
