At Aarohi, some kids have been playing with electronics circuits, some are curious… Rajesh joined as a mentor to ignite imagination and indulge into some more electronic world and madness. It began with “why we need to make something, why not buy from the market?” This was definitely not a trick question from rajesh, this made all us think “why we want to make?’

Kids shared

  • We can do what we want as per our ideas
  • Feel proud
  • Understand something when make by self and it becomes more friendly
  • Life span is more, because then we can repair
  • Consumption is less
  • Relationship of making is different than consuming

Now, the next questions was “what is making?” What does making sense of something’ means? Making is not only what we make physically, it also means making sense. Are we not born with innate sense of making sense of something – we make sense of actions, people, life around us…clouds, people insects…This led to wondering ‘are all invention making sense of something?’ Inventions are nothing else but joy of making.

The discussion moved to “ when we make something we stay with it, when we just buy we reject it soon”. Kids shared how buying toys and throwing them is very common in our lives, how we are excited about a toy for few days and then no more look at it.

Now the discussion moved into the direction of “why some of us were impatient when we were not able to make what we had thought?” One child shared “may be just wanted to make, we already had product in mind”….we moved on to discussing about what ‘playing’, how about playing with electronics rather than just making a end product (lie detector or solar car)…the discussion moved to ‘what is living?’ One was quick to share “Really living when when I play and make”.

Hmmmm it was about electronics and we moved to living. The discussion session was meant for 15 minutes, it continued for an hour… after the session we went back to making 🙂
