We were exploring musical instrument with children from nearby village. After children used musical instruments, they explored about musical instruments – What is the material? How do they make sound? How else they can make sound? Then we all made sounds from parts of the body – some made from lips, nose, throat, hands, legs, mouth, tongue. Children were listening in silence the ringtone of mobile and were trying to understand which all instruments were used to create the ring tone.

Few children choose to look at books about music. Some made own instrument – few made musical flute using leaves, some made instruments using cardboard boxes, rubber bands, straws, corks.

One child was involved in making the music instruments with straws, soap box, cork etc.During reflection few took this child’s instrument and showed because they did not make and were searching for material.

Few were involved in making leaf flute and were in search of leaves trying from one plant to other – with teak leaves, coconut , banana.

One child made jingles with stones, putting in bowl and covered with banana leaf. One child made jingles with paper roll and corks, Other made jingle with bowl, bottle caps covered with paper.

I enjoyed making guitar in soap box with hole and without hole – using rubber bands and there was a difference in sound. Tried with rubber band in different material like plastic bowl, cardboard, pen stand. With hollow surface the sound was good than with solid surface. I learnt with kids and enjoyed – Leela

While exploring the instrument I found most of the instruments were round and very few were non spherical. Sound varied with weight of the material used.
